Tavern Scrawl #56: Patch update!
– Mon, Oct 28, 2019 at 11:39:04 PM
Greetings, adventurers!
We are super happy to bring you our newest patch update!
TL;DR:
Prologue Refactor!
Our writer, Shawn, is currently in the middle of a sweeping refactor of the prologue encounters to make their results have more of a lasting impact on the world of Beor. The first wave of changes are now playable in our new patch! In addition to fine-tuning many of the existing stages, there are two new quest chains that can be unlocked in the prologue:
“Sometimes Dead Is Better”
For some time, failing the squire stage in the prologue resulted in Merrick Ravinger re-animating the fallen squire, Odessa Dauntless, to continue fighting. That used to be the end of the story. Now, not so much. During the decade following The Battle of Mountain Fall, Odessa grew into a powerful vampiric knight who now threatens the region and must be dealt with.
“Bengar Netherkin”
Bengar Skullsplitter has long been unlockable as a playable character in the prologue, but failing to save him will now result in the famous weaponmaster being transformed into a horrific monster by the netherkin. A decade later, it’s up to you to finish what the Ravinger Four started and put down the creature once known as Bengar Skullsplitter.
New Compound Encounters!
In your travels, you’ll encounter an increasing number of multi-part encounters with our latest batch of compound encounters.
These new encounters place a particular focus on ranged combat, so now some battles will kick off with a volley of ranged attacks before the fighting gets up close and personal. There are also opportunities to avoid encounters entirely or reverse an ambush through a successful perception check. And there are new massive random encounters, including…
“The Siege of Smiling Acre Farms”
When the heroes happen upon an idyllic farm swarmed by a slavering horde of zombies, it’ll take every skill in their arsenal to deal with the horde and its creator while attempting to save as many members as possible of the besieged family. Your actions will determine the fate of Smiling Acre Farms and decide whether future encounters at the farm are cause for celebration (providing a range of buffs) or a painful reminder of past failure.
Seasonal Encounters!
Shawn has devised a system for determining what season it is based on your turn number. Random encounters should now accurately reflect the time of year! Does your crew have what it takes to survive getting caught in a multi-stage blizzard?
Lots of Quest and Stage Fine-Tuning.
Shawn has made minor adjustments to dozens and dozens of encounters, fine-tuning their effects, rewards and text to make everything just a little more epic.

Tavern Scrawl #55: Happy Octobrew!

– Fri, Oct 04, 2019 at 08:03:59 PM
Greetings, adventurers!
We hope that your October has started off fangtastic, and you are finding the time to Trick-or-Treat yourself! Okay, okay, enough of the skele-puns....but come on, you kind of like us because we can be a bit candy-corny, no?
First off, we’ve fixed the nasty “make-camp, break-camp looping” bug. Any saves that were stuck in this fashion will now proceed to completion.
What'll it be, adventurer? A Morgue-O-Rita?
We've been working on completing the latest round of updates for quest assignment, questecution, and quest UI in general:
Stage generation during questecution has been reworked so as to protect against broken quest states like the infamous Make/Break Camp loop bug.
Hunger and starvation now accumulate in stacks that will correlate with character effects messaged by all new UI elements.
We now have a quest progress indicator for parties in the field, additional contextual messaging for various party states and events (resting, departing, returning, etc), and a much better way of viewing quest underway or completed via a modified form of the questecution panel.
We've also begun improvements to some map elements such as success/fail icons on quest markers with returning parties, improvements to quest marker info pop-ups, more consistent display/cleanup of party avatars, paths, and quest markers.
Finally, optimizations that improve quest log recall speed, and endless random bug fixes related to the map scene.
We want to thank you all, our wonderful community, for interacting with us on a daily basis - your contribution and communication continues to make for a better Epic Tavern, and for that, we are extremely appreciative! Tavern Scrawl #54: Compound Encounters!
– Sat, Aug 17, 2019 at 12:21:44 AM
Greetings, Adventurers!
When we started designing the narrative system for Epic Tavern, we didn't know how many possibilities we would have come up with in the future. Over time, our system has become more and more dynamic, and our writer Shawn French has definitely ran with it. With that being said, we have a lot of exciting things coming down the road!
Writing Update… Compound Encounters!
Up until now, quests could unfold over the course of multiple stages, but random encounters on the road were all isolated, one-off events. Those days are over. We will now have the ability to create multistage random encounters, and better yet to have them branch based on your results! Knocking out a bunch of those has been Shawn's main focus the past couple weeks.
So now a random encounter against a group of goblins might start with a Perception stage to try to spot the ambush, then either lead to a difficult Melee stage if you failed and walked into the trap, or an easier Subtlety stage if you spotted the ambush and are trying to reverse it. Victory could then unlock a Puzzle stage where you try to pick the lock to a treasure chest you recovered. The possibilities are endless!
At the moment, Shawn is writing up the most elaborate random encounter in the game, where you run across a farmhouse under siege by zombies and try to save them over the course of 7-10 stages (depending on how it plays out). There are eight possible endings that each have ripple effects in-game depending on how many members of the family you were able to save (if any), so there will be consequences that extend well beyond the fight itself.

Tavern Scrawl #51: New Patch Incoming!
– Thu, Jun 06, 2019 at 10:34:21 PM
Come gather around the table, adventurers, it's time for an update! The Epic Tavern team has been on a quest to get you a patch, and they have just about ventured back with it. Let's raise our glasses!
Glug glug glug...
The biggest announcement we've got for you is that we've moved our development build to the Unstable branch. What this means is that the version of the game that we are testing for the latest patch is available for you check out! Beware, it is likely to have bugs! But you will be able to see the latest and greatest. Don't be a chicken!
This is how you access Unstable:
Steam: In your Steam library, right click on Epic Tavern. Click on Properties. From there, click on the Beta tab at the top right. Under the drop down menu, select Unstable - Public Test Tavern. Your client should then download the unstable version.
GOG: In your GOG library, click on Epic Tavern. Next to the play button, click on More. Select Settings in the dropdown. On the right, you will be Beta Channels. Toggle it from off to on. You will then see another dropdown menu in the center of the screen next to channel. Under that dropdown menu, select Public Test Tavern - Unstable. Your client should then download the unstable version.
We are still squashing a few bugs in this version and, once it is good to go, we will be moving that build onto our stable branch.
**Please note that the Unstable version is indeed unstable, and you will likely run into some bugs.**
Even so, please feel free to check it out!
Here are some of the cool things you are going to see in this patch:
We did a full narrative pass over every quest and encounter in the game:
Assigned custom durations for every encounter based on results
Updated every encounter to new skill categories
Fine-tuned hit point damage/recovery
Added spirit point damage/recovery
Fine-tuned difficulty on every encounter
Added compound encounters, making it so random road encounters can now branch into multi-stage stories based on results
Laid the groundwork for upcoming supply system
Did a cleanup/punch-up pass on all narrative content in the game
All encounters now reflect the correct time of day for the party
Skills and their categories have been significantly reworked. There are fewer skills now, but they are more tightly integrated with individual encounters.
Encounter types have been expanded and their relationships to the skill systems have been improved.
Additional stances have been added and stance calculations have been refined.
Quest supplies and hunger have been integrated. (still a bit wonky, but getting there!)
The Drink Chain Combo is more flexible in that you can stop serving at anytime.
Now THAT'S what I call an Agg-runson!
Tomo's fun skill wheel diagram!
Stahp!
We will be posting the rest of our patch notes with all the nitty-gritty details soon after the patch releases! Don't ask us when! Why do you ask so many questions! Children should be seen and not heard! Go to your room!
Ahem. If you would like to join us for daily updates, playthroughs, development streams and more, please join us on our Twitch streams every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 4pm PST, or our Discord dev chats Tuesdays at 10:30am PST and Thursdays at 4:00pm PST.
