Tavern Scrawl #42: Effects and SFX!

Hello, Fellow Adventurers!
Since our last update, we have gained [HEROALL=>EFFECT:25:5]!.... What we’re trying to say, is that we have not only squashed a lot of bugs, but a good portion of our fixes and feature work involved the development of Character Effects. What are Character Effects? They are essentially what happens to your heroes and they get bumped, banged, and boon’ed while on their adventures. And yes, Boon’ed means that they drink too much Strawberry Hill, for your old school Taverneers, out there. Read on below for the deets, and you will soon see how all this affects you! (See what I did there?!)
First of all, Character effect indicators have been redesigned and refactored. Effects now appear on or near the character portrait in the Character Sheet, the Character Interaction panels, and on the right end of the Roster List Items. 0 to 3 Effect indicators are displayed, depending on whether the character has any or all of the following: 1) Character has a buff (something good!), 2) Character has a debuff (something less gooder!), and 3) Character is recovering in a facility.
On mouseover of an effect indicator, an enhanced tooltip-style pop-up is displayed which provides details about that effect for your pleasure and edification.
We made some adjustments to the default effects characters have at game-start. Generally speaking, we’ve simplified the way characters accumulate and recover from effects, clearing the way for us to add more and varied effects. It also has the added bonus of making everything clearer and easier to manage so you can make the right calls to keep your party in tip-top shape.
Furthermore, character effects are now factored into party contribution during quests. Active effects are also called out in stage results, along with their part of the contribution value.
During quest assignment, we added a "Join Party" button to the mini-roster character details panel. This makes assigning adventurers easier by eliminating the extra step:
Keep in mind that we do all this because we love you. Giving you painful UI hurts us as much as it hurts you.
We also restored display of the character details upon clicking that character in the mini-roster, and improved the character details “back to roster” button.
In the tavern, the New Quest pop-up is refactored with the straight edge motif; adding a quest class indicator, a landmark icon, and more animated text elements.
Some bug fixes, while tedious and unrelated, are worth the mention: the Loot Divvy Sliders now function as expected! Huzzah!
Our designers have also been doing a pass of all audio aspects of the game. Through this sweep, we have applied planned sound effects, and fine-tuned things along the way:

Tavern Scrawl #41: Highlights from Patch Notes Build 0.825.4
almost 9 years ago

Hello Brave Adventurers!
Looking at our patch notes covering the work completed this past month, we are happy that so much ground has been covered! Out of the 50+ points in that report, we wanted to show you some highlights that affects not only the look and feel of the UI, but affects the gameplay.
Questing: We have refactored the quest panel to better communicate a few things about any given quest. We have added an image to indicate quest class (in this example, a combat-centered quest), and we also have the quest chain displayed (ex: “Rats!, Chapter 1”).
When reaching the “key stage” (the stage directly related to the quest), the stage displays the same as other non-travel stages, but with unique visual skin differentiating itself from the other stages.
The new adventurer roster has two states available at will: full screen and half screen. Half screen allows you to view the roster while chatting with patrons to facilitate "strategic socializing" - while chatting it up with your patrons, you are able to compare them to adventurers on your current roster, and see if you should pass them up, or if they’d be a valuable addition to your team!
Full screen allows viewing of equipment, story, and event log in the character sheet while also displaying more items in the roster list.
Roster capacity is now determined by tavern reputation. The more popular your tavern, the more adventurers you are able to send out on quests.
With that being said, the player must now really choose carefully who they want on their adventuring team, and who they really want to spend time with. This plays into our “strategic socializing” we mentioned earlier. When the roster is full and you speak with a patron you would otherwise be able to hire, an alternate button appears prompting you to manage your roster:
From there, you choose if you would like to strategically dismiss someone on your current roster and make room, or just choose not to hire them for now and move on.
Leveling is no longer a mode that requires spending of points to complete, but rather an instantaneous event that grants bonus points to be spent at any time. This event will exclusively take place in the roster screen. Leveling can be done in either full-screen or half-screen roster view, allowing the possibility of character feedback via character interaction panel.
While we have a lot of big things refactored and fixed, we also have paid attention to the details. As requested, we have added a randomized tavern name option when creating a new Tavern. When you click on the dice, a random tavern name will appear!
Along with stabilization and further bug fixes, we have more to come in terms of equipment, and more to come in having more choices during questing!

Tavern Scrawl #40: UI = Useful information!

Welcome Tavern Patrons!
For the last few weeks, we have been continuing our testing and fixing to stabilize the game build, and we have also improved the gameplay for party construction. This includes a number of things:
For starters, we have updated the display showing what the player needs to start a quest. Does the player need more combat skills? Mind skills? Now the quest outlines the needs for the quest more clearly.
Next, we wanted to provide the player with more information to make it much easier to figure out which adventurers will give them the best chance of succeeding on a quest. Showing their primary skill icons gives the player a faster snapshot of what that particular adventurer can contribute towards the accomplishment of said quest.
For quest assignment, we made improvements to how we show players the quest destination and why the party is heading there, along with making a clearer display of the potential rewards for completing the quest.
Now that we’ve gotten the technical stuff out of the way, we also wanted to show you how pretty the tavern is now! [cue: “ooooh’s” and “aaaah’s”... And it looks even better in motion!]
