Hello, Brave Adventurers!
Just wanted to let everyone know that development continues unhindered and to talk a bit more about some recent development trajectories that are pretty fun and are going to end up making Epic Tavern a blast.
Friendship: Those of you who are old or well-versed enough will have recognized the title of this update as part of the theme song for the TV show Cheers. It was about a bar and the friendships formed between the regulars in there. We've often described the concept of ET as "D&D meets Cheers", which always gets a laugh. But it's something we're dead serious about. While there will be Epic adventures aplenty in ET, we believe the true magic of this game will be the relationships you form with your tavern patrons and, specifically, how your relationship changes as you grow and face challenges together. Adventuring can sometimes lead to heroic triumph and it can sometimes lead to abject loss, but it always leads to change: to abilities, to mental and physical states, and sometimes to the very nature of one's being. We are obsessed with exploring this idea and how it relates to your relationships with your heroes, and (eventually) their relationships with each other. Our goal is to create a game where the stories that happen inside the minds and hearts of your Tavern patrons are every bit as Epic as the the greatest legends of old. We're working hard on this, and can't wait to bring you all along on the ride.
Tavern vs. Stories: One of the subjects that has been a recurring theme of development is, "What's the most important part of Epic Tavern?" There are many aspects to the game, and chief amongst them are the Tavern, the Heroes, and the Stories. Our minds basically bounced back and forth between the three, until we realized that they were all important and depend on one another to work: if one is anemic, the other suffers. Recently, an important follow-on realization was that we had been keeping the concepts too separate: If they were so intimately related, why not explore ways to connect them on a systematic level? It makes so much sense that it seems obvious in hindsight. We're still exploring this idea, but it's really exciting and already yielding some surprisingly compelling results.
Finally, we've been busting our butts with other fun parts of game development, namely polishing up our user interfaces/experience, and squashing those darn bugs.
I know we say it a lot, but we are just so excited to get this game in your hands. What we love even more than giving you updates here is talking directly with you during our Twitch streams. Hello, Taverneers! Let’s dive right into this update: The Epic Tavern team is making huge strides toward Early Access. Planned features, such as our in-depth player/character relationship system, are being put into the game as you are reading this paragraph. Already-implemented features are being tested vigorously. Through testing the game build after build, we are able to see things that we haven’t seen before - which allows us to make the crucial adjustments that are bringing us closer to the highly-anticipated Early Access release. Also, Richie has been running around bothering people with a camera:
